Thales Scottish Technology Prize for Data & Image Processing 2009

Thales is pleased to announce the launch of the Thales Scottish Technology Prize for Data & Image Processing, following the success of our 2008 campaign for Laser Technology. This year's theme is Data and Image Processing.

Thales Optronics is leading the way in developing products and systems with sensors for navigation, guidance, surveillance, stabilisation, range-finding, pointing, designation and many other functions. All of these sensors produce critical data, which has to be transmitted, analysed and acted upon in real time. Increasing degrees of system autonomy and networked operation increase the scale of the processing requirement. Product functionality, intelligence and connectivity are key factors for success, processing is the key technology that provides our products with high levels of capability. Thales is renowned for its innovation and ability to create products, which join these capabilities to provide its customers with world leading products.

Thales is seeking entries from Scottish Universities on any bright ideas they may have in the area of Data and Image processing.

What is on offer this year?

Thales is offering a significant cash prize once again!

First Place:  £25k to the winning university PLUS £5k personal cash for winning entrant/team

Second Place:  £3k personal cash for winning entrant/team

Third Place:  £2k personal cash for winning entrant/team

What did the winning University say about last year's prize?

"We were delighted to have this opportunity to engage with Thales: the fact that we retained all our IP made this an easy and trouble-free process of significant mutual benefit. The significant prize money went a long way in helping the group's research activities."

2009 Competition Prize Winner, Dr Walter Lubeigt, The University of Strathclyde

''The University of Strathclyde embraced the spirit of the Thales Scottish Technology Prize and submitted entries from staff and students from several departments. The open engagement sought by Thales, including clarity on the retention of IP by the originator, was straightforward and innovative.''
