Industry at Photon 08
This summer sees the return of Photon, the largest optics conference in the UK. Photon 08 is expected to attract over 600 delegates to the conference and 250 delegates to the exhibition and Industry Technology Programme, held at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh from 26-29 August.
The UKCPO has put together a strong three day Industry Technology Programme (ITP) which is specifically aimed at engineers and physicists in the photonics industry. This will run in parallel with the academic programme organised by the Optics and Photonics Division of the Institute of Physics. Each day of the ITP will be split into three themed sessions each consisting of three 20 minute presentations followed by 10 minutes questions and discussion.
The theme on day one will be Funding and Commercialisation. Here the presentations will focus on how to start, grow and fund your business and will include some company case studies including Kromek, a Durham spin-out now poised for IPO.
On days two and three there will be sessions focusing on Future Technologies which will include industry roadmaps from associations such as WOF and OIDA and presentations from leading researchers and industry players. On the Wednesday Bill MacDonald from DuPont Teijin Films and from Ken Durose at Durham Centre for Renewable Energy will be highlighting the most recent advances in flexible displays and renewable energy. On Thursday Richard Dorward from Ericsson and Jack Gabzdyl from SPI Lasers will be discussing how industry is advancing in the more established areas of communications and laser technologies.
Accompanying the Future Technologies sessions on Wednesday, the AILU Medical Group has organised a full day session on Lasers in medicine and biophotonics. This will present and discuss the latest advances in laser enabled bio-research and how lasers are used not just in medical procedures but in the manufacture of other medical applications.
