Organisation Description

For over 9 years, Vision has been at the forefront of advances in CMOS imaging technology. Following acquisition by STMicroelectronics (ST) in early 1999, Vision is now the Vision & Imaging Business Unit, incorporating ST’s existing imaging activities, within ST’s Consumer and Micro Group. The headquarters continues to be in Edinburgh, Scotland. The mission of the new unit is to position ST as the world-wide leader in semiconductor products for CMOS imaging applications.

Vision & Imaging developed and patented technology that enables the integration of image sensing and image processing on a single CMOS microchip. The principle advantages of this approach are major reductions in cost, size and power requirements over the alternative CCD technology, and in ease of system integration.

Product/Research Description

Through it’s in-house R&D team, Vision & Imaging has developed considerable experience in CMOS imager design. This is now enhanced by the increased R&D capability available within ST.

Vision & Imaging has been producing CMOS imaging chips since 1990, and has been behind a number of innovative products that have expanded the markets for electronic imaging technology, including the first single chip CMOS cameras.

With a comprehensive range of sensors from 20k to 1.3m pixel resolution, and a choice of companion co-processors, ST Vision & Imaging provides total solutions for a wide variety of applications. These include desktop PC cameras, mobile communication systems, personal digital assistants, digital still cameras, security, biometrics, automotive systems and toys.
