14th International Optoelectronics Association Meeting

IOA representatives at their meeting listen to presentation by their host, South Korea.

The 14th meeting of the International Optoelectronics Association (IOA) took place in Gwangju, South Korea on 12th & 13th October 2009. The picture captures a presentation from the hosts (South Korea) to the other members – Japan, Europe, USA, Germany, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Switzerland, Canada and, of course Scotland (Chris Gracie, CEO of SOA seated second from the right). Unfortunately IOA member Australia was unable to attend this year. The meeting heard presentations from each country in turn addressing the global optoelectronics markets as seen from a national perspective.  This was followed by a review of their activities since the last meeting (in Melbourne Australia in October 2008).  It was decided that the 15th Annual meeting would be in Taiwan during the Photonics Festival which will take place between 9th to 11th June 2010.

During the second day the meeting addressed a proposal that would be submitted to the European Commission's FP7 programme ICT Call 5 on behalf of the IOA. The proposal addresses the global problem of Greenhouse Gas emissions and the contribution that optoelectronics could make to their reduction, a subject ideally suited to the International Optoelectronics Association.

The IOA was formed in 1996 and brings together the national associations of all the major optoelectronics producers in the world.  Since 1996 the association has reflected the growing importance of optoelectronics as an enabling technology growing from 4 members to 11 currently.
